Founded in 1890 by British port-wine families, the oldest golf club in the Iberian Peninsula.

Groups arrive expecting a round and leave talking about the clubhouse, where the walls read like a history of golf in Portugal. The course is walkable and forgiving off the tee, so mixed handicaps stay together and the pace never drags. Lunch here is unhurried and properly old-fashioned, which makes it a fine opening round for a week in the north.

Centenary trees and elevated tees in the grounds of a historic palace hotel.

A quiet, green, deeply civilised morning of golf in the hills, with elevated tees that flatter almost everybody. The palace grounds make it an easy day for non-golfers, who can take the spa or the gardens while the group plays. We often pair it with an afternoon in the Douro for groups who want one memorable day away from the coast.

Three kilometres of Atlantic dunes, fast greens and a relentless sea breeze.

This is the round your low handicappers will want on the itinerary, with the wind turning every club choice into a conversation. Higher handicappers still enjoy it if we start them from forward tees and keep the format a team one. The ocean is in view from almost every hole, so the photographs are as good as the scores are honest.

Reviews

In their words

“We’ve taken golf trips to Scotland and Ireland, but this was the smoothest by far. Portugal Magik arranged every tee time at Monte Rei, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, and our clubs were always waiting at the bag drop. Our driver knew the quickest routes and some excellent seafood spots. The eight of us are already planning next year.”

“Four couples, with half of us golfing and half not, could have been complicated. Instead, everything worked perfectly. The golfers played Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa while the others explored Sintra with a wonderful guide, then we all met for dinner in Cascais. Not one detail was missed.”

“Portugal completely exceeded our expectations. We were eight friends travelling from the US for a week of golf, and Portugal Magik handled everything from the moment we landed in Lisbon. The vehicles were excellent, always on time, with plenty of room for all of us and our golf bags. What really made the difference was the flexibility: tee times, dinners, sightseeing for some of the wives, a last-minute change of plans, nothing ever seemed to be a problem. We played several fantastic courses around Lisbon and Cascais and finished in the Algarve. One of the easiest and most enjoyable golf trips we have ever organised.”

“This was not just a golf trip, it felt like a proper vacation. The golfers had some exceptional days on the course while Portugal Magik arranged private touring, shopping and sightseeing for those of us who did not want to play every day. Everyone enjoyed Portugal their own way, then we met again for dinner in the evening. Beautiful Mercedes vehicles, friendly drivers, great communication and wonderful attention throughout. We loved Lisbon, Cascais and especially our few days in the Algarve.”

“Our group has been doing an annual golf trip for more than 15 years, so we have experienced plenty of destinations and tour companies. Portugal was right up there with the best. Portugal Magik took care of the logistics brilliantly: comfortable private transport every day, our clubs handled without any hassle, and we never felt rushed. There was always flexibility to stop for lunch, stay longer somewhere or change the evening plans. Great golf, excellent food, a few too many bottles of Portuguese wine, and absolutely no worries about transport. That is pretty much the perfect golf holiday.”

Patrick O.

“We brought twelve clients to Portugal for a golf incentive and needed the trip to be flawless. It was. Transfers arrived on time, the vans were spotless, and when a storm disrupted one round, the team rearranged it that same afternoon. Our clients are still talking about the experience.”

  • Four to six months is comfortable for most groups, and longer for spring and autumn, when the best tee times at the celebrated courses go first. We can still put together excellent itineraries at shorter notice, simply with a different order of courses.
